English India takes us from the history of languages to modern-day tourist towns — where tour guides discuss their language skills and concerns about the rise of electronic tools making them obsolete…

There's a deep connection between the English language and the cultural and political history of the Indian subcontinent. Brought to the country by colonizers and then adopted by the Indian elite, English has become a language of power in India. In a country with more than 30 regional languages, English is one of two tongues that has been designated "official," the other language being Hindi.

English India takes us from the country's history of languages to modern-day tourist towns where hopeful young tour guides discuss their language skills and their concerns about the emergence of electronic tools making them obsolete.

So, on this episode of ANOKHI PULSE TV, we speak to the film's director, Spandan Banerjee, to find out how he weaves his personal story and journey throughout the story of English India. We also see how tour guides are trying to survive in India's new, technologically advanced landscape.
