How To Thrive In Times Of Uncertainty

“I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.” ? Gilda Radner

Have you found yourself staring outside your window asking “What am I going to do with my life?”, “How did I get here?” or “What’s next?” At times a sense of fear sets in because you just don’t have all the answers about your future. Sound familiar? In my experience that eerie feeling of uncertainty about your future is really one of the best things that can happen to you.

Circumstances from our past, present and future have the ability to form our life's path, the natural part of life which at times we don’t have control over. Simply put, NOT having all the answers ahead of time is a gift and the exciting part of life…..let me explain.

The fear of the unknown can be stifling for most. There is a constant effort to strive for certainty to ensure safety and security which can be related to our careers, our family, finances and so on. I am challenging you to stop yourself from going down this path simply to feel safe and secure. Instead, embrace the place of ambiguity you are at by starting to ask yourself some of the following questions and see what answers appear within you.

    1. Why does this feeling of uncertainty scare me?

This is a loaded question because many times the answer will not appear straight away. When you answer this question, dig a little deeper and ask yourself “Why” about 5 times to get to the real reason or impetus behind your fear.

The answer is often deep rooted and complicated, requiring a bit of  soul searching from your end. You may find yourself having to process emotional and mental barriers newly discovered.

It is also helpful to talk to trusted friends and begin the process of asking “Why” you are fearful in this state of uncertainty.

    2. What am I supposed to learn from this?

Every situation brings us something new to learn. If you really look at your history, you will actually see the signs that led to the circumstance that you currently find yourself in.

If we miss this lesson we are bound to come across it again until we truly grow and learn from it.

    3. What have I always wanted to do but believed I couldn't pursue before?

Sometimes we park life dreams or pursuits merely because of the circumstance we were in before. Start reflecting on those earlier dreams. Many will still resonate with you today and you may have more options or actually be more open to pursuing them as your life situation has considerably changed.

The aforementioned three questions are enough to spark a light and begin your journey to find clarity during your times of uncertainty.

Remember that the answers to your future and what you are meant to do with your life really resides within you.

    I wish you the best.
