How To Thrive During Times Of Ambiguity

Are you feeding the good wolf or bad wolf?

“I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.” ? Gilda Radner

It is inevitable that we will all find ourselves in spaces of ambiguity. How we cope and conquer our dilemma during those times usually determines how successful our lives will be. Recently, I had the privilege of hearing 'Transformational Leadership' Coach Tina Dias provide some insights on how to thrive during times of ambiguity.

She began by sharing a story about a conversation between an old Cherokee and his grandson and it goes like this:

“One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, "My son, the battle was between 2 "wolves" inside us all. One was evil. It was anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other was good. It was joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?" The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed.” ? Cherokee Indian

Executive Coach Tina Dias, continued to explain that there are three questions we need to ask ourselves so we are aware of how we cope during times of ambiguity and when we feel lost.

What meaning have we placed on this scenario?
The secret in Ambiguity is to understand the meaning we have put on the scenario. In other words what is the weight and importance we have put on the situation and space we are in. So, if we put a dark and heavy meaning then we are taking the path of the 'Evil Wolf'. However, when you are in the space of curiosity and possibility you are taking the path of the 'Good Wolf'.

How are you interpreting this time of ambiguity?
When we are faced with ambiguity, there is a way we interpret the space we are in based on the meaning. Interpretation in this case is the story we tell ourselves and create for this stage in our lives. The stories we tell ourselves get inflated over time until the truth comes out. If you have inflated the story in a negative way, there is a lot of work to back pedal to the reality of a situation. However, if you have inflated the story in a positive way (the path of the Good Wolf), the reality and truth does not impact you harshly and leaves you to continue on with your spiritual and soulful journey in life.

What are your foundational belief systems?
The interpretation and storytelling about any situation is almost always based on your core beliefs. Two people can be presented with the same situation but their differences in beliefs can direct two different meanings and interpretations and which determines their choice of thinking which is either The Good Wolf of curiosity and benevolence or the Bad Wolf of anger, resentment and negativity. Be aware of your core belief systems, because it is a game on how you choose to live your day and the choices you make in your life.
