Ex-Vogue Model Raudha Athif Found Dead, Suicide Or Murder?

Anokhi Today Our Society Apr 05, 2017

21-year-old Raudha Athif modelled as a hobby while studying medicine. Her dream of becoming a doctor came to a unexpected demise.

Athif was found lifeless in what authorities are claiming to be an apparent suicide.

The second-year student at Islami Bank Medical College in Bangladesh was found hanging from a dorm room ceiling fan with a scarf tied around her neck.

“She always looked happy,” said Mahmuda Begum, the superintendent of the hostel where Athif stayed. “It is hard to believe she would commit suicide.”

Athif first rose to prominence as the “Maldivian Girl With Aqua Blue Eyes,” when her pictures on social media created a sensation and went viral.

Her picture also landed her on the cover of Vogue India, along with five other South Asian women who embraced individuality and inspired others to the same.

“Modeling is a hobby rather than a career for me, since I’m studying to become a doctor,” she said in her interview for Vogue last year. “I’ve never been so bold as to take part in any big pageant before this.”

An alleged autopsy report ruled Athif’s death a suicide, but loved ones are having a hard time accepting the promising young woman would end her own life.

Professor Emdadul Haque, a member of the alleged autopsy team, said: “There was no evidence of sexual or any other kind of abuse on her body. We have sent samples to Dhaka for further testing to determine if she had ingested any pills. However, at this point, we are certain that this was a suicide.”

Athif was buried in Rajshahi on Saturday but her father Mohammad Athif is still not convinced it was death by suicide.

“My daughter cannot commit suicide. She was murdered,” he told reporters after meeting with two visiting Maldivian police officers.

Chief Superintendent Mohamed Riyaz and Chief Inspector Ahamed Ali from the Maldives Police Services are also conducting their own investigation into the model’s death and have yet to make any comments.

Athif’s mother Aminath Muharrimath said police officials have spoken to the family and “we told them that we found several grounds that suggest she was murdered.”

“Local authorities are claiming it was a suicide, but they did not provide us with the autopsy report,” she said.
