Coldplay Is Finally India-Bound For A Massive Show!

Yes, it's true! The wait is finally over. Coldplay fans in India can breathe a sigh of relief as the band’s long-awaited, highly anticipated concert in Mumbai has been confirmed.

The show is part of the larger Global Citizen Festival that will hold its first Indian concert on November 19th, coinciding with World Toilet Day – a special day chosen by the United Nations to highlight the lack of access to proper sanitation – a serious issue affecting 2.5 billion people worldwide.

Rumours of a possible Coldplay concert in India have been circulating since mid-2015, when frontman Chris Martin performed a well-reported impromptu gig at a Delhi café and had a jam session with musicians in Mumbai. Further fuelling the rumour mill was the band’s video shoot for "Hymn for the Weekend" in Mumbai. But apart from the low-key partying and video shoots, the purpose of Martin’s initial visit to the country was to represent Global Citizen and lay the groundwork for the organization's Indian chapter.

Launched in 2012, Global Citizen is a revolutionary online social action platform and mobile application that tracks and rewards activists' actions through a point-scoring system. Activists can then use their points to purchase various experiences, including the organization's own massive music festival.

Martin took on the role of curator of the festival in 2015 — a 15-year commitment to help eradicate extreme global poverty by 2030 in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

After initial reports of astronomical ticket prices ranging from 25,000 rupees to five lakhs, festival organizers clarified that, as per the organization's established practice, tickets won't cost any money. Fans will have to earn their tickets, however, through various charitable acts supporting education, equality and sanitation campaigns. Each action earns points, and once participants have earned enough points, they can redeem their points for a chance to win tickets to the festival via a lottery.

Along with Coldplay, hip hop mega-star Jay Z will also perform at the festival. A host of Indian stars will also participate — including actors Aamir KhanRanveer Singh and Katrina Kaif as well as musical trio Shankar Ehsaan Loy, among many others.

The organization will announce several other international acts at different stages of the campaign. But Global Citizen Founder CEO Hugh Evans says it’s about a lot more than just seeing big names on stage, Firstpost.com reported. Evans said, “People do come to see Coldplay perform. But the reason they stay on with this initiative is because they want to make a difference and they realise how their time and effort made a difference.”

Attending a mega-concert with some of the biggest names in the world and helping a very worthy cause? Sounds like a win-win to us!
